Sweaty Palms & Padel Courts

Maya's palms were sweating. Like, actually dripping. She wiped them on her denim shorts (again) and took a sip from her Vitamin Water — the pink one, obviously — like it was some magical potion that would make her cool.

"You ready, Mays?" Liam called from the padel court, racket twirling like he owned the place.

She nodded. Totally. Because that's what you do when you're secretly freaking out about your first padel lesson with the popular crowd.

The summer sun beat down on the outdoor courts. Water droplets from the fountain nearby caught the light, tiny prisms dancing. Maya wished she was that water — effortless, flowing, not overthinking every single movement.

"She's coming," whispered Chloe, pointing toward the courtside bench.

The Sphinx.

That's what everyone called Raven. Because she was mysterious. Intimidating. And no one could figure her out — she was beautiful, rich, and somehow completely unreadable. She sat there sunglasses-on, scrolling through her phone like she was above it all.

Maya stepped onto the court, heart pounding.

Raven looked up, slid her sunglasses down her nose. "You play lefty or righty?"

"Uh... righty?" Maya's voice squeaked.

"Good." Raven stood up, stretched. "I need a partner for the tournament next week. Tryouts are now."

The popular crowd went silent. Now?

Maya's palms weren't just sweating anymore — they were full-on waterfall. But then she caught Raven's eye. Behind the sunglasses, something flickered. Not challenge. Not judgment.

Hope?

"Left hand on the grip, princess," Raven said, moving Maya's hands. "Like you mean it."

The first serve sailed perfectly. Maya's palm didn't just stop sweating — it stopped mattering.

By the time the sun set, Maya wasn't just the new girl anymore. She was Raven's partner. And somehow, that felt bigger than being popular.

"Same time tomorrow?" Raven asked, packing her bag.

"Bet," Maya grinned.

The Sphinx had finally been solved. And Maya? She'd just found herself.
