Sweaty Palms & Mechanical Bulls

Maya's palms were literally sweating through her denim shorts. Which was gross, but also fair, because she was standing face-to-face with *The Bull* — a mechanical bull at Shane's birthday party that everyone had been talking about all week at Northwood High.

"You're not actually gonna do it, right?" sneered Tyler, the kind of guy who peaked in middle school and still hadn't realized nobody cared about his varsity jacket. "Like, you'd literally embarrass yourself."

Maya's best friend Sam squeezed her hand. "You don't have to prove anything to these losers."

But here's the thing about being the new girl who'd already spent three months being invisible in the back of AP Bio: sometimes you wanted to be seen. Even if it meant holding on for dear life while a mechanical machine tried to launch you into fake oblivion.

The operator, some guy with neck tattoos and a dead-looking gaze, raised his eyebrow. "Three bucks, cash only."

Maya's hands shook as she dug crumpled bills from her pocket. Her palms were so sweaty she could barely grip the leather handle as she swung her leg over the bull. Someone wolf-whistled. Someone else yelled "YEEHAW" with zero irony.

The machine jerked to life beneath her. First it was gentle, almost laughable. Then it started bucking like it had something to prove. Maya's grip tightened, her fingers white-knuckled, her breath coming in sharp bursts. She could hear Tyler laughing, could feel the whole room watching, waiting for her to fall.

But then something clicked. Not physically — like, mentally. She stopped fighting against the movement and started flowing *with* it, her body shifting instinctively, finding balance in the chaos. For eight seconds, she wasn't the new girl or the quiet one or whoever everybody thought she was. She was just... *on it*.

The bull stopped. Maya swung off, legs shaky but steady, and faced the room.

"What?" she said, breathless. "You thought I'd eat it?"

Sam was already recording. "DUDE. You literally slayed."

"Whatever," Tyler muttered, suddenly fascinated by his phone.

Maya looked at her hands — still trembling, palms still sweaty — and realized maybe being seen wasn't so terrifying after all. Maybe she'd spent so much *running* from attention that she'd forgotten how to stand her ground.

Then Shane's mom announced pizza, and the moment shifted, but Maya caught Sam's eye and they both cracked up. Because sometimes the scariest moments ended up being the ones that changed everything.

"Wanna do it again?" Sam asked.

Maya looked at the bull, then at Tyler sulking in the corner, and grinned. "Honestly? Yeah. But like, make it harder this time."
