Sweaty Palms & Fox Hats

Maya's palms were sweating so much her phone kept slipping from her grip. The gymnasium transformed into a glittery pyramid of streamers and stolen expectations — homecoming, the social Everest of sophomore year.

"Take this," Sophie shoved a gummy vitamin at her. "My brother said it'll help with, you know, anxiety stuff."

Maya hesitated. "Is this... legal?"

"It's literally vitamin B complex, relax."

The moment they stepped inside, the heat hit them. Someone had constructed a literal pyramid of red solo cups by the punch bowl, already listing dangerously. And there he was — Connor, wearing the most ridiculous fox-eared beanie like it was totally normal.

"Your crush is wearing a fox hat," Sophie observed. "Bold choice."

"It's not a crush," Maya lied, badly.

Her palms got worse. She tried to subtly wipe them on her dress, spotted a group of juniors filming TikToks, and somehow managed to knock over the cup pyramid in one spectacular motion.

The music kept pumping. The cups scattered everywhere. Connor in his stupid fox hat turned around.

"Nice form," he grinned. And instead of dying of embarrassment right there, Maya surprised herself by laughing.

"My palms are literally defective," she blurted. "I can't hold anything."

"Good thing you don't need to hold anything to dance," he said, extending a hand.

Somewhere between Sophie's questionable advice and the fox-hat guy who somehow made dorky look cool, Maya realized she'd been building this moment into something it wasn't. The real pyramid wasn't made of cups — it was the one in her head, where every social interaction was life or death.

She took his hand. "My palms are still gross though."

"I'll risk it," Connor said.

And maybe it was the vitamin gummy talking, or maybe it was just time to stop overthinking everything, but Maya finally let herself breathe. The fox hat was ridiculous. The pyramid was down. Her palms were sweaty. And somehow, that was all okay.
