Sweaty Palms at the Fox's Den
Maya's palms were literally dripping as she stood outside the chain-link fence. Why had she agreed to come to Tyler's pool party again? Oh right, because Jen had been all "you HAVE to go, it's gonna be LIT" and somehow Maya had let herself get dragged into this social suicide mission.
The water shimmered like liquid diamonds in the backyard, surrounded by those tacky inflatable flamingos that everyone seemed to think were ironic or something. Tyler—aka "the Fox" because of his reputation for being smooth AF—was currently doing cannonballs off the diving board while half the sophomore class cheered like he'd invented water.
Maya clutched her towel against her chest. She'd barely survived changing in the bathroom without hyperventilating. Her phone buzzed in her pocket—probably Jen asking where she was.
"You gonna stand there all day or actually jump in?"
She jumped. Spun around. It was Tyler, dripping wet, grinning like he knew exactly how nervous she was. His hair was plastered to his forehead and there was water running down his—okay, Maya needed to stop staring.
"I'm... I'm good," she managed. Smooth. Real smooth.
"Come on." He held out his hand. "I won't tell anyone you're scared of a little chlorine."
Her palms weren't sweating anymore. They were straight-up cascading. But she took his hand anyway.
Later, as they sat on the pool edge with their feet in the water, Tyler told her about how he got the nickname. "Freshman year, I tricked the teacher into giving us an extra week on that huge project. Everyone called me sly after that. It just... stuck."
"So the whole Fox thing is just academic procrastination?" Maya teased, feeling surprisingly comfortable.
Tyler laughed. "Pretty much. Not exactly the mysterious origin story everyone thinks, huh?"
"Nope. Kinda disappointing actually."
"Ouch." He splashed water at her.
That night, Maya realized something. Sometimes the things that seem intimidating from afar are just regular people being awkward. And sometimes sweaty palms and pool parties and foxes with way too much hype are exactly what you need to stop hiding and start living.
