Sweaty Palms and Sweet Papaya

Maya's mom stood in the kitchen doorway, holding out the neon orange gummy vitamin like it was some kind of peace offering. "You're not leaving without this. Coach says padel tryouts are intense."

"Mom, please," Maya groaned, grabbing the vitamin and shoving it in her pocket. "It's just racket sports. Not the Olympics."

Her palms were already sweating thinking about it. Padel was huge at Northwood High – like, if you weren't on the courts, you were basically nobody. The social pyramid was crystal clear: varsity padel players at the top, then regular sports people, then...

well, then there was Maya.

She'd been practicing her serve against the garage wall for three weeks. Her neighbor Mrs. Chen said she had potential, which Maya chose to believe because Mrs. Chen also thought Maya's papaya addiction was "spiritually significant."

"You got this, May," her best friend Lena texted as she walked toward the rec center. "Even if you crash and burn, we're getting boba after."

The courts were packed. Coach Rodriguez blew her whistle and the chatter died.

"Alright, ladies! Show me what you've got!"

Maya's heart hammered against her ribs. She stepped onto the court, grip tightening on her racket. The girl across from her was Taylor – team captain, flawless eyeliner, probably had never experienced a single awkward moment in her entire life.

"First to eleven," Taylor said, spinning the ball on her racket. "Ready?"

Maya nodded, throat dry.

Taylor served. It was decent, but Maya was ready. She'd watched every padel TikTok tutorial twice. Her racket connected with the ball –

*THWACK.*

Perfect angle. Taylor scrambled for it but missed.

"Nice," Taylor admitted, actually looking impressed.

They played for twenty minutes. Maya's ponytail escaped, her knees were scraped, and she was pretty sure her forehead looked like a shiny tomato, but she was holding her own. The social pyramid suddenly felt... climbable?

"Alright, bring it in!" Coach Rodriguez announced. "Final roster goes up tomorrow."

Maya grabbed her water bottle, hands still shaking a little. Taylor walked over.

"You're new, right?" Taylor asked. "Like, actually good new."

"Uh, thanks?"

"We need a fourth for mixed doubles club tonight," Taylor said. "You in?"

Maya's brain short-circuited. Taylor. The Taylor. Inviting her. To play.

"Yeah," Maya managed. "Totally."

She walked home feeling light-headed, pulling the squished vitamin gummy from her pocket and popping it in her mouth. Her dad was cutting up papaya at the counter.

"How'd it go?"

"Good," Maya said, grinning. "Really good."

That night, she lay in bed, palms still sore from gripping the racket, phone buzzing with Lena's texts, stomach full of papaya and the weirdest, most wonderful feeling: tomorrow, she'd walk through school doors and the pyramid wouldn't look the same at all.
