Sweaty Palms and Silver Buckles

bullpalmdog

Maya's palms were sweating so bad she could barely grip the phone. Her best friend Kai was blowing up her screen with texts about the Fair tonight.

"you coming?? everyone's gonna be there"

"jasper will be there 😏"

Maya groaned and flopped onto her bed. Barnaby, her ancient chocolate lab, thumped his tail against the floor. He'd been her emotional support dog since she accidentally-on-purpose failed her driving test last month.

"Barnaby, how do I tell them I'm not ready?" she whispered. The dog just licked her hand and went back to napping. Helpful.

Her mom's voice floated up from the kitchen. "Maya! That sweet boy Devon is picking you up at seven!"

Maya's stomach did that thing where it felt like a swarm of bees had taken up residence. Devon. The guy she'd been crushing on since eighth grade, who'd finally noticed her exist two weeks ago when they got partnered for that bio project.

She texted Kai back: "fine whatever I'll go but if I embarrass myself you're deleting all evidence"

Two hours later, Maya stood in front of the mirror in cutoffs and her favorite flannel. Barnaby whined at the door like he knew something was up.

"I know, buddy," she sighed, checking her reflection. "I look like I'm about to sell you my soul for a corn dog."

Devon pulled up in his brother's truck, looking unfairly good in a faded band tee. They met up with the group by the entrance. Jasper was there, laughing at something Kai said, and for a second Maya just watched them all—so comfortable in their skin, while she felt like she was faking it.

Then someone pointed at the mechanical bull.

"Fifty bucks says Maya can't stay on longer than ten seconds," Jasper challenged, grinning.

Everyone looked at her. Maya's palms were suddenly slick again, her heart hammering. But then she saw Kai giving her that tiny nod, the one that said I've got your back.

"Make it a hundred," Maya heard herself say.

The ride operator—some guy who looked like he'd rather be anywhere else—cranked the machine. Maya climbed on, determined not to humiliate herself in front of Devon and Jasper and everyone.

The bull lurched beneath her, and suddenly she was gripping for dear life, screaming with laughter as it bucked and spun. She lasted eight whole seconds before tumbling off into the padding, breathless and disheveled but somehow—impossibly—alive.

Devon helped her up, still grinning. "That was kinda badass."

Kai whooped. Jasper looked impressed. And Maya stood there in the glow of carnival lights, sweat-sticky and messy-haired, finally feeling like maybe she belonged.
