Sweaty Palms and Silent Sphinxes

Maya's palms were practically dripping as she stood outside Tyler's house, the bass vibrating through the doorframe. This was it—her first real high school party. Her mom had spent forty minutes on her hair that evening, curling it into perfect waves that Maya was already self-conscious about.

"You got this," she whispered, wiping her hands on her denim shorts. Third time tonight.

Inside, the air smelled like fruity punch and too much cologne. Someone had spiked the cooler—obviously—because freshman Jenny was already giggling at nothing in the corner. Maya grabbed a soda and tried to look like she belonged.

Then she saw him: Marcus, the sphinx of the sophomore class. He was gorgeous in that quiet, mysterious way, always sitting in the back of English class, rarely speaking but somehow dominating every conversation with his presence. He was leaning against the kitchen counter, alone, nursing a drink.

Her friends dared her to talk to him. Total bull—like any of them would actually do it. But Maya's feet were moving before her brain could protest.

"Hey," she managed. Her voice squeaked. Her palms were sweating again.

Marcus looked up, dark eyes assessing her. For a moment, the room's noise faded. Then his lips curved into something almost like a smile. "Hey. You're in my English class, right?"

They talked for twenty minutes about everything and nothing—about how Mr. Harrison's riddle assignments felt impossible, about how high school was weirdly both the best and worst thing ever, about how they both felt like they were faking their way through most social interactions.

When Tyler's older brother started telling some obviously exaggerated story about a wrestling match, Marcus rolled his eyes. "Pure bull," he murmured to Maya, and she laughed harder than she had all week.

Later, walking home under streetlights, Maya realized her hair was probably a mess and her makeup had worn off hours ago. But for the first time since starting high school, she didn't care. She'd talked to the sphinx of tenth grade. She'd survived her first party. And okay, maybe she'd gotten his number.

Her phone buzzed in her pocket. Unknown number: *This is Marcus. The English sphinx. Just wanted to say—your hair looked perfect tonight.*

Maya pressed her phone to her chest and grinned at the moon. High school might be weird, but tonight? Tonight had been pretty damn good.
