Sweaty Palms and Second Chances

Maya's palms were literally dripping. She'd been standing outside the cafeteria for ten minutes, clutching her phone like it was a lifeline, watching groups of friends laugh at tables she wasn't invited to join. Sophomore year was supposed to be different. That's what her older sister had said. But here she was, still the quiet girl who sat alone.

Then she saw him — Riley, the guy from her English class who always made sarcastic comments about the books they read. He was running toward her, looking panicked, with a golden retriever puppy on a frayed leash struggling to keep up.

"Hey! Sorry, weird question — can you hold my friend Kevin's dog for like two minutes? I forgot my vitamin upstairs and I literally cannot function without it, it's a whole thing."

Maya blinked. "Uh, sure?"

"You're a lifesaver." Riley shoved the leash into her hand and took off toward the stairs.

The puppy immediately sat on her foot and looked up with the world's most manipulative puppy eyes. Maya knelt down, and the dog licked her chin. Okay, this was actually kind of nice.

When Riley came back, breathing hard, he sat on the bench beside her. "Thanks. His name is Buster. Kevin's in PE, obviously."

"Obviously," Maya echoed, and they both laughed.

"You're Maya, right? From English? You wrote that thing about how Gatsby was basically a simp with money."

She felt her face get hot. "That was... not my finest analysis."

"Nah, it was hilarious. Mrs. Peterson literally looked like she wanted to expel you." Riley grinned. "Hey, some of us are gonna go to the boba place after school. You should come. We can discuss more literary hot takes."

Maya looked at her hands, then at Buster, who had somehow wedged himself between them. The bell was about to ring. She could say no, could go back to being the quiet girl who always sat alone.

"Yeah," she said. "Yeah, I'd like that."

Riley stood up, taking the leash. "Cool. See you there, Maya."

As she watched him run toward the building with the puppy bouncing alongside, Maya realized her palms were finally dry. Sometimes the best moments happen when you're just standing there, holding someone's dog, and someone decides to sit next to you.
