Sweaty Palms and Papaya

Maya's palms were practically dripping as she gripped the padel racquet. This was it — her first day at the exclusive summer club, and somehow she'd let Chloe talk her into trying out for the junior team. Everyone else looked like they belonged in a magazine, while Maya felt like an imposter in her oversized sun hat.

"You've got this, chica," Chloe whispered, bumping her shoulder. "Just don't think about how cute Jake is watching from the sidelines."

Maya's face burned. Jake. The reason she'd agreed to this in the first place. He was leaning against the palm tree by the courts, looking effortlessly perfect in his sleeveless shirt.

The coach blew the whistle. Maya's first serve sailed straight into the net. Someone giggled. She tugged the brim of her hat lower, wishing she could disappear.

After practice, Maya found herself at the club's smoothie bar, staring at the menu. "What's a papaya?" she muttered, feeling uncool for never having tried one.

"Only, like, the best fruit ever," Jake said, suddenly beside her. "Let me get you one. You'll love it."

They ended up sitting together at one of the umbrella tables. Maya's nervous hands twisted around the cable of her earbuds as they talked. Jake was actually funny — not like his Instagram persona suggested. When he mentioned how he hated how the club felt like a competition for everything, Maya finally relaxed.

"That's exactly how I feel," she said, surprised by her honesty. "Like I'm always performing."

Jake looked at her really looking. "You don't have to perform with me. That's, like, literally my favorite thing about talking to you."

That evening, Maya texted Chloe: I think I might actually like padel. And papaya. And maybe Jake?

Chloe回复 immediately: CALLED IT. But don't lose the hat — it's your signature vibe.

Maya smiled, catching her reflection in the mirror. Maybe being herself — hat, sweaty palms, first attempts and all — wasn't so bad after all.
