Sweaty Palms and Bad Hair

bearpalmhair

Maya's palms were literally dripping. Like, actual sweat situation. She wiped them on her denim shorts for the third time, leaving dark patches that she KNEW would look hella awkward. But whatever. Jake was leaning against the lockers down the hall, laughing at something Chloe said, and Maya was about to risk absolutely everything.

Her hair was already betraying her. The curling iron had decided straight hair was the vibe today, leaving her with this weird semi-wavy situation that looked like she'd rolled out of bed and said "this is fine." Her mom's old advice—"just bear with it, sweetie"—echoed in her head. Spoiler alert: she could NOT just bear with it. This was her LIFE.

She'd practiced this moment in her mirror approximately 847 times. The hair flip. The casual approach. The perfect opening line that would make Jake finally see her as more than "that quiet girl in bio." But now her palms were sweating again and her brain was doing that thing where it replayed every embarrassing moment from sixth grade in HD.

The hallway noise swelled—lockers slamming, people shouting, someone's phone blasting that TikTok audio everyone was obsessed with. Maya's heart hammered against her ribs. She could do this. She WAS doing this.

She took a step forward.

And tripped.

Her folders exploded across the linoleum. Papers EVERYWHERE. Jake and Chloe turned to look at the same time. Maya's face burned hotter than the time she'd accidentally FaceTimed her crush while eating spaghetti.

But then Jake was there, crouching beside her, gathering her papers. His hand brushed hers, and Maya swear his fingers felt soft as he grabbed her bio worksheet. His other hand reached out—palm open—to help her up.

"You good?" he asked, and somehow his voice was deeper and kinder than she'd imagined from three rows away.

"Yeah," Maya managed. "Just... gravity is my enemy today."

Jake laughed. Actual laugh. Not that fake courtesy one. "Gravity and I have beef too. No cap." He pulled her up, and for one electric second, their palms touched. His were warm, slightly calloused from basketball, and totally dry. The unfairness of it all.

"Your hair's cool," he said, surprising the heck out of her. "Like, actually different. Everyone else does that same Instagram wave thing. You're just... vibing."

Maya's brain short-circuited. Her "weird semi-wavy situation" was now her "aesthetic"?

"Thanks," she said, finding her voice. "I'm Maya, by the way. We're lab partners in—"

"Bio," Jake finished. "Yeah, I know. I was gonna come say hi, but you always look like you're in your head. figured I'd wait."

Wait. WHAT.

Chloe rolled her eyes dramatically. "Oh my god, just exchange Snapchats already. The tension is literally painful."

Jake pulled out his phone. Maya pulled out hers. Their palms were totally dry this time when their fingers brushed again, and maybe—just maybe—she could bear with the hair situation after all.

Because Jake noticed her. And not despite the bad hair and the falling and the sweating palms. But somehow, through all of it.
