Sweating Palms at Match Point

Maya's palms were sweating through her grip as she stood at the baseline, the blue padel court blurring beneath her sneakers. This was it—tryouts for the high school team, and her hair, newly cropped into a pixie cut against her mom's wishes, kept falling into her eyes.

"You've got this, Maya," Liam shouted from the sidelines, his signature encouragement. He was the one who'd convinced her to cut it last weekend, scissors in his bathroom while his parents were out. "It looks sick, trust me." The hair had felt like rebellion, like finally becoming someone who took up space.

Across the net stood Brayden, aka "The Bull" not for his build but for his absolute refusal to ever let a ball drop without diving for it. He'd been playing padel since kindergarten, his family's backyard court basically his nursery. Maya had picked up a racquet exactly three weeks ago when she'd discovered her old crush was joining the team.

"Nice cut," Brayden said, nodding at her. Wait, was that approval?

The serve came hard. Maya's racquet connected—solid, surprising both of them. They rallied back and forth, the distinctive *thwack* of padel balls filling the gym. Her heart was running a marathon, each beat screaming what if I choke, what if I embarrass myself, what if this was all a mistake.

Then Brayden hit it wide. Maya sprinted, diving, her palm scraping the court as she somehow, miraculously, got it back over the net. The ball dropped just inside the line. Point. Brayden's eyebrows shot up.

"Not bad," he called, actually smiling. "Think you can keep that up?"

Maya stood, knees shaking, palm stinging, grinning like an idiot. Her mom would kill her for the scrapes, her hair was a mess, and she might still not make the team. But for once, she wasn't the girl sitting on the sidelines anymore. She was in the game.

"Watch me," Maya said, and meant it.
