Surveillance at the YMCA

Elena sat in the YMCA parking lot, her brown hair plastered to her forehead with sweat, watching the building through rain-streaked windows. She'd been following Marcus for three weeks now, hired by his wife who suspected infidelity. Instead, Elena had stumbled into something far worse.

Inside, Marcus was swimming laps — his third night this week. But Elena wasn't watching him. She was watching the woman in lane four, the one with the severe black bob and military posture who'd arrived in a government vehicle.

Running surveillance had seemed glamorous when she'd started her private investigation firm last year. Now it was just lonely dinners in her car and the creeping sense that every marriage she investigated was rotting from the inside.

Her phone buzzed. Unknown number.

"You're being made," a voice whispered. "Leave now."

Elena's heart hammered. She'd never told anyone where she was working tonight. She looked at her reflection in the rearview mirror — exhaustion etched around her eyes, a strand of hair escaping her messy bun. When had she become the kind of person who lied for a living?

Marcus emerged from the building, toweling his hair. The woman with the bob followed at a distance. Something passed between them — a slight nod, barely perceptible. Then they walked in opposite directions, melting into the night.

Elena's fingers hovered over her keyboard to type up her report: Marcus's swimming routine, his "mystery woman," the circumstantial evidence his wife was desperate to believe proved an affair.

Instead, she deleted everything and drove to the office she could no longer afford. At 2 AM, she closed her investigation business and sent Marcus's wife a refund.

Some secrets weren't hers to expose. Some waters ran deeper than marriage. And some things, once seen, could not be unseen.
