Surface Tension
Maya stood at the edge of the pool, clutching her iPhone like a lifeline. The screen glowed with unanswered texts—her squad blowing up the group chat without her. She should've been at Sarah's, where the real party was happening. Instead, she'd agreed to housesit for her aunt, watching over an ancient goldfish named Bubbles who'd probably outlive them all.
The pool lights rippled blue across the backyard. Jake's house. The guy she'd been low-key flirting with since Bio partnered them together. His friends splashed and screamed like they were in a music video, while she stood there in her one-piece like she was guarding the property.
"Yo Maya!" Jake waved from the deep end. "Get in here!"
Her stomach did that thing where it forgot how to organ. She mumbled something about checking her cable—like that made any sense—and fumbled with her phone charger, suddenly the most interesting object in existence.
Then she saw it. A familiar figure approaching the pool gate. Chen. Her actual friend, the one who knew she hated pool parties, who knew she'd rather be home watching anime. Chen, who'd told her earlier that day, "I'm busy tonight" with that look that meant I'm lying.
But Chen wasn't busy. Chen was here.
Their eyes locked across the flickering water, and Chen's face did that whole eyebrow thing that said, you good though? Maya shook her head almost imperceptibly, and Chen immediately grabbed a floatie, marching over like she was on a mission.
"Your aunt's goldfish okay?" Chen asked, plopping down beside her, casual as anything. "Because I'm not letting you miss out on life over a fish that's basically immortal."
Maya's chest loosened. "Bubbles is fine. But I think I forgot my... cable... inside."
"Wow, terrible lie," Chen laughed. "Wanna know something? Jake invited me too. I only came because I saw you were here."
The pool lights danced between them. For once, Maya's iPhone stayed in her pocket. She wasn't the awkward girl at the edge anymore. She was just Maya, sitting with her best friend while somewhere in the distance, a goldfish probably didn't give a flip about any of this.
"Race you to the deep end?" Chen challenged, already toeing off her slides.
Maya smiled. "You're going down."
Some connections didn't need a cable. Some didn't need signal. They just needed someone to jump in with you.
