Sunday in the Deep End

Elena swam laps in her sister's pool, the water cold against her skin, her movements mechanical. Three months since she'd taken the job as a corporate spy for Atlas Dynamics, infiltrating their competitor from the inside. She was good at it. Too good.

Her phone sat on the patio table, vibrating with another message from her handler: *Confirm the merger details by tonight.*

"You're going to prune your fingers if you don't come out," called Sarah from the grill, where spinach sizzled alongside salmon. "Mark's inside. He's been asking about you."

Elena pulled herself from the water, dripping. Mark—Sarah's husband, the CFO of the very company Elena had been hired to destroy. He'd taken her under his wing when she'd joined, mentored her through her first rough months. He believed in her.

The weight of it bore down on her shoulders like a physical thing.

She toweled off and joined them at the table. Mark smiled, passing her a plate. "Your sister tells me you're thinking about leaving Biogen."

Elena's fork paused, the spinach suddenly tasteless. "Maybe. Just... thinking about options."

"Good," Mark said, leaning in. "Because I wanted you to be the first to know. Atlas Dynamics approached us about a merger. We're turning them down—their numbers don't add up, something's off. But I wanted to offer you a promotion. Executive team. You've earned it."

The spinach turned to ash in her mouth. Her company's merger attempt—her mission—was failing because of her. Because she hadn't betrayed him enough.

She looked at Mark, really seeing him for the first time: the lines around his eyes, the genuine warmth, the trust he placed in her. And she realized she wasn't swimming anymore. She was drowning.

"Mark," she said, setting down her fork. "There's something I need to tell you."

She could bear it—finally bear the truth, whatever it cost her. Even if it cost her everything.
