Summer Sparks
The humidity in Miami hit like a wall, but Maya's clique lived at the pool anyway. She adjusted her bikini top for the tenth time, acutely aware that everyone was judging her. Which they probably weren't, but that's how it felt when you're fifteen and your **iphone** buzzed with ignored texts from your crush who'd left you on read for three days.
The squad sprawled across lounge chairs like royalty. Chloe showed off her new **palm** tree tattoo — totally fake, totally cool. They spoke in rapid-fire slang: 'no cap,' 'slay,' 'that's so mid.' Maya nodded along, heart pounding. Why was it so hard to just exist sometimes?
Then HE walked in. Liam from AP Bio, shirtless, holding a **padel** racket. Maya's stomach did that embarrassing flutter thing. He waved at their group. Someone shouted, 'Liam! Come play **padel** with us!' Maya's throat went dry.
'Nah, heading to the court,' he called back. But then he locked eyes with Maya. 'Unless someone wants to join?'
The whole group went silent. Maya felt twenty pairs of eyes on her.
'Sure,' she squeaked. 'I mean, yeah, bet.'
They walked to the **padel** court together, Maya hyper-aware of every step. They talked about school, music, how weird it was that everyone expected them to have their lives figured out already. It felt easy. Natural.
Then it happened — a **lightning** storm rolled in. The sky cracked open, rain pouring down as they sprinted for cover. They ducked under a shelter, drenched and laughing. The moment felt electric, like actual **lightning** between them.
'Maya,' he said, 'can I get your number?'
Her **iphone** buzzed in her wet pocket. A text from him. Already.
Later that night, Maya **swimming** in possibility, finally understood: all that overthinking, all that insecurity — it was just noise. Sometimes you just have to dive in.
