Summer Skin

papayaswimmingsphinx

Maya stood at the edge of the community pool, clutching her towel like armor. The chlorine smell hit her first—sharp and artificial—but underneath it was something else. Something sweet and foreign.

"You gonna swim or just stand there looking like a Sphinx riddle everyone's afraid to solve?"

She turned. It was Leo, the boy with the stupidly perfect everything, holding a container of fruit chunks. His dark hair was already wet, droplets tracking down his neck. Maya's stomach did that thing it did whenever he was within ten feet.

"I'm thinking about it," she said, which was a lie. She wasn't thinking. She was overthinking.

"Try this first." He held out a piece of fruit on a plastic fork. "Papaya. My aunt brings it back from the mercado every weekend."

Maya hesitated. Her therapist said she needed to say yes to things. Her mom said she needed to get out of her comfort zone. Her friends said she needed to stop being so in her head all the time.

She leaned forward and took the bite. The texture was weird—soft but grainy, like butter mixed with sand. But the taste hit her different. Bright, almost musky, with this aftertaste of melon and something she couldn't name. Something that felt like summer and secret conversations and skin.

"Well?" Leo raised an eyebrow, doing that Sphinx thing again where his expression was unreadable but somehow meant everything.

"It's... different," Maya said. "Good different."

"Good different is the best kind." He set down the container and stepped toward the pool's edge. "Now get in here before I judge you forever."

Maya dropped her towel. Her bikini was new—she'd spent forty minutes in the Target dressing room overthinking whether it was too much, too revealing, too her. But Leo was already cannonballing, sending up a splash that drenched her legs.

She jumped.

The water shocked her cold for exactly one second before she adjusted, before she remembered how to move through it. She broke the surface slicking her hair back, gasping, and Leo was already there grinning like he'd won something.

"See? Not so scary."

Maya treaded water, heart pounding, skin prickling with something that wasn't just cold. She felt real in a way she hadn't all summer. Like she was finally, actually, somewhere.

"Hey Leo?" she said. "That papaya—your aunt's place have more?"

He laughed. "Way ahead of you, Sphinx. Way ahead."
