Summer's Social Pyramid
Maya's plan for the perfect summer crashed harder than her physics final. Instead of lounging by the neighborhood pool with her friends, she was stuck working at her uncle's "direct marketing startup" — which was definitely a pyramid scheme, even if he refused to call it that. The only upside? Barnaby, her uncle's ancient orange tabby cat, who seemed more interested in napping on product samples than helping Maya make sales.
The real gut punch came when she saw Instagram. Chloe's pool party. Everyone who mattered was there, floating in the crystal-blue water, drinks in hand, perfect smiles frozen in time. Maya had spent hours curating her feed to look like she belonged in that social pyramid, but the truth? She was barely holding on to the bottom layer.
"Working hard or hardly working?" a voice called. She looked up from the display of protein powder to see Liam — the guy she'd been lowkey crushing on since seventh grade — dripping pool water onto the concrete floor.
"Both," she deadpanned, then regretted it. So smooth.
But he laughed. "Wanna get out of here? There's this party at Chloe's..."
The party. Where she'd never been invited. Until now.
"Let me just grab my stuff," Maya said, trying to play it cool even as her heart hammered against her ribs. She scribbled a note for her uncle, fed Barnaby some treats, and followed Liam out the door.
Later that night, floating in the pool under string lights, Liam asked what she'd been working on all summer. "A pyramid scheme," she admitted, waiting for him to judge her.
Instead, he splashed water at her. "Same. My cousin got me into it last month. It's embarrassing."
They laughed — really laughed — and Maya realized something: the social pyramid she'd been trying to climb her whole life? It wasn't real. But this moment, floating under the stars with someone who got it? This was actual. This was enough.
