Summer's Social Pyramid
The club's outdoor pool shimmered like liquid diamonds, but Maya's stomach did nervous flip-flops. She stood at the edge of the padel court, clutching her racquet like a lifeline.
"You got this, Maya!" Jake called from the other side. His curly hair, sun-bleached to golden brown, flopped into his eyes as he grinned. That grin had been the subject of Maya's late-night thoughts all week.
The club's social pyramid was brutal: Jake and his friends at the apex, swimmers like her somewhere in the middle, and the lounge-chair regulars at the base. But padel lessons had thrown everyone together.
"Game point!" Jake's opponent served.
Maya's hair whipped across her face as she scrambled to return it. The ball sailed wild.
"My bad," she muttered, face burning.
"No worries!" Jake's dimples appeared. "Want to hit the pool after?"
After—like it was a given. Like she belonged.
Later, floating in the cool water while Jake and his friends argued about music playlists, Maya spotted it: a calico cat perched on the chain-link fence, watching them with judgy yellow eyes.
"That cat's been stalking us all summer," Jake laughed, splashing water at the fence. The cat didn't flinch.
Something shifted. The pyramid didn't matter so much when a stray cat was judging everyone equally.
Maya dove underwater, letting the silence envelop her. When she surfaced, Jake was right there.
"Hey, you doing okay?" He pushed wet hair from his forehead. "You seem... quiet today."
The moment stretched, heavy with possibility. Her first real crush, and he'd noticed her?
"Yeah," Maya said, finding her voice. "Just thinking."
"About what?"
"About how the cat's probably the smartest one here."
Jake's laugh rang out, bright and unguarded. And just like that, the pyramid collapsed into something that looked a lot like friendship.
