Summer's Social Pyramid

The **pool** glittered like spilled diamonds under the July sun, and somewhere in its depths, I'd left my dignity. My best friend Leo had dared me to jump from the roof—I did, but now my phone was sitting at the bottom of the deep end, probably posting ghost stories on its own.

"You alive down there, bro?" Leo called from the deck.

I surfaced, spluttering. "My **iPhone**. My actual life."

That's when Chloe walked in. The girl who'd sat behind me in bio since freshman year, the one whose hair somehow always smelled like vanilla and expensive decisions. She was wearing this vintage band tee I'd been searching for months, and suddenly I was very aware that I was dripping wet in trunks I'd owned since eighth grade.

Her golden retriever, Buster, bounded over like a furry tornado. He knocked into me, nearly sending me back into the water.

"Buster, no!" Chloe rushed over. "Oh my god, are you okay?"

We locked eyes. Time did that slow-motion thing where everything goes weird and quiet.

"Just... admiring the underwater view," I managed.

Smooth. Real smooth.

Her **cat**, Luna, watched imperiously from a lawn chair, judging everyone with that specific feline disdain that says, "I could destroy you all but can't be bothered."

Later that night, dripping and phone-less, I sat with Leo on his roof watching stars pop into existence like someone was flipping switches in the universe.

"You know what high school is?" Leo said. "A **pyramid** scheme." He gestured vaguely toward his suburban kingdom. "Everyone's trying to climb over everyone else, and the whole thing's built on nothing."

"Deep," I said, but I was thinking about how Chloe had laughed when Buster knocked me over. Not mean laughter. Real laughter.

My phone would probably work after rice therapy. But something shifted today—in the way the sunlight hit the water, in a moment of perfect, embarrassing clumsiness, in the possibility that the girl who smelled like vanilla might actually see me.

Sometimes you have to sink a little before you learn how to swim.
