Summer's Catwalk

Maya stood by the community pool, clutching her towel like a lifeline. The popular kids were all on the padel court, laughing and sweating in their cute matching outfits. She'd spent three weeks practicing her serve against the garage door just for this moment, but now that she was actually here? Total freeze-out.

"Hey! Watch out!"

Something streaked past her legs—a fluffy orange cat that had definitely not been on the guest list. It bolted straight toward the padel court, tail puffed like a dandelion.

Without thinking, Maya dropped her towel and sprinted. The cat scrambled onto the court, right in the middle of Liam's backswing.

The ball hit the fence with a clatter. Everyone stared.

Maya's face burned. But she kept walking toward the cat, who was now cowering under the bench where Sophia had left her designer bag.

"It's okay," she murmured, dropping to her knees. The cat hissed, then relaxed as she scratched behind its ears. She scooped it up, orange fur everywhere against her black swimsuit.

Silence. Then—

"That's actually kind of badass," said Liam, the guy she'd been crushing on since seventh grade.

Sophia, queen of everything, rolled her eyes. "That cat's been lurking around all summer. My mom's been trying to catch it forever."

Maya's brain glitched. Had she just interrupted the biggest social event of the season to rescue a stray?

"Your mom's been trying to catch him?" Maya stood up, cat purring in her arms like a motorboat. "I can help. I do animal rescue volunteering."

"Wait, seriously?" This from Chloe, who usually ignored Maya's existence. "That's so cool. We found a kitten behind the school last year and had no idea what to do."

By the end of the afternoon, Maya was sitting on the edge of the pool, legs dangling in the water, teaching three of the coolest kids in school how to properly hold and pet a suspiciously calm orange cat named Cheeto. She'd missed her chance to play padel, but somehow she'd won something way better.

"Next week," Liam said, splashing water at her. "You're totally playing padel with us. And you're teaching us everything about cat whispering."

Maya ducked the splash, grinning so hard her face hurt. Sometimes the best moments happen when everything goes completely wrong.
