Summer Pyramid Scheme

Maya's summer took a weird turn when her older cousin Jay started treating their high school social hierarchy like some kind of pyramid scheme he'd definitely fallen for.

"You gotta climb, cuz," Jay said, gesturing at the cafeteria seating chart like it was sacred geometry. "Bottom feeders stay bottom. Top tier gets the papaya."

"The what now?" Maya asked.

"The papaya. The exotic stuff. The good life." Jay was running this little pyramid scheme where he'd somehow convinced half the sophomore class that if they recruited enough people to sit at specific tables, they'd unlock 'social equity.' Whatever that meant.

The whole thing was ridiculous until Lucas — the quiet cute guy from Maya's English class — got roped into it. Lucas, who spent his afternoons running cross country and secretly watching baseball documentaries in the library. Lucas, who Maya had been lowkey crushing on since September.

"My cousin says I need to bring three people to the Tuesday table," Lucas told her after practice, looking miserable. "You interested?"

And that's how Maya found herself at a weird recruiting meeting behind the bleachers during a baseball game, listening to Jay explain how the 'pyramid worked' while an actual fox kept darting around the edge of the field.

"That fox is faster than your brain, Jay," Maya muttered, watching the sleek orange creature bolt across the grass.

Lucas laughed. Then he caught her eye and smiled, really smiled, not the polite half-smile he usually gave everyone.

"This is stupid," he said. "Wanna bail?"

They ended up at the bodega around the corner, where Lucas bought them both papaya juice on his dad's card.

"I've never actually had papaya," Maya admitted.

"Me neither," Lucas said, opening his bottle. "Wanna try it together?"

The juice was weird. Sweet but kinda musky, like how summer felt when you were fifteen and everything was happening and nothing was making sense.

"So," Lucas said, wiping his mouth. "About that pyramid."

"Forget the pyramid," Maya said, and something in her chest did a little running leap, like maybe she'd just figured out something better than climbing any stupid social ladder.

They skipped the rest of the meeting. The fox was still somewhere out there, probably doing whatever foxes did, which was definitely not following anyone's pyramid scheme. Maya figured that was pretty smart.
