Summer of the Midnight Padel
Maya dragged herself to the community center courts at 11:45 PM, feeling like a certified zombie after four hours of doom-scrolling TikToks until 3 AM. Her cousin Leo had convinced her that midnight padel was totally a thing that cool people did, and honestly? She was desperate to prove she wasn't the boring honors student everyone thought she was.
The court lights flickered on, revealing Leo and his friends—Chloe with her perfectly messy bun, and Kai, who Maya had definitely not been stalking on Instagram for three weeks straight.
"You made it!" Leo grinned, tossing her a racquet. "Prepare to get absolutely cooked."
"I'm literally running on three hours of sleep and an iced americano," Maya groaned, though her heart did this annoying flutter thing when Kai waved at her.
The game was chaos. Padel was like tennis's cooler, younger cousin who didn't take itself so seriously. The ball ricocheted off the glass walls, someone's phone blasted a playlist that was 90% Bad Bunny, and Maya discovered she was actually kind of incredible at smashing balls into corners.
Then came the water incident.
Maya, diving for what would've been the game-winning shot, crashed directly into the decorative fountain someone had definitely installed way too close to Court 3. She emerged completely soaked, hair plastered to her face, dignity somewhere at the bottom of the fountain.
But instead of laughing—okay, they laughed a little—Chloe handed her a sweatshirt, and Kai was like, "That was literally the most epic save ever, even though you're basically a drowned rat now."
And maybe it was the adrenaline, or the fact that she'd spent all night overthinking everything, but Maya found herself cracking jokes about her zombie status and actually having fun. Not performative fun. Actual fun.
"Next time," Kai said as they left, "we're playing earlier. And maybe stay away from fountains?"
"No promises," Maya replied, and for the first time all summer, she didn't feel like she was faking anything.
