Summer of the Mechanical Bull
Maya's summer was supposed to be all about beach trips and scrolling through her feed, but then her parents announced they were cutting the **cable**. No more endless streaming, no more vegging out. "Find yourself a hobby," her mom said, with that terrifyingly optimistic tone parents use when they think they're helping.
Instead, Maya found herself at Chloe's quinceañera practice, watching her best friend obsess over every detail. The party venue had this ridiculous **bull** - mechanical, obviously, because this was suburban Texas, not an actual ranch. "You're going to ride it," Chloe insisted, like it was some rite of passage.
"Absolutely not," Maya said. "I have zero coordination and even less dignity."
But later that night, after three sodas and way too much peer pressure, Maya found herself strapped onto the beast. The operator smirked, hit the button, and suddenly Maya was clinging for dear life as the machine bucked and spun. Her hair whipped everywhere, someone's phone caught her mid-scream, and she somehow stayed on for seven whole seconds before tumbling onto the padded mats.
The video got like, 200 views, which was basically viral in their school.
The real moment came afterward, though. She'd escaped to the venue's back patio, sweaty and humiliated, when Ethan - the guy she'd been lowkey crushing on since seventh grade - found her by the **water** fountain. His hair was damp from the pool, and he was actually looking at her like a person, not just Chloe's awkward friend.
"That was legendary," he said, filling his cup. "No joke."
Maya rolled her eyes but couldn't help smiling. "I looked ridiculous."
"You looked brave." He paused. "Wanna hang out by the pool? Chloe's doing her thing inside."
And just like that, Maya's summer of nothing became something else entirely. The cable was still cut, but maybe that wasn't the worst thing ever. Sometimes you had to get thrown off a mechanical bull to find what you were actually looking for.
