Summer of Static Shock

Chloe's palms were sweating. Again. Not the cute, glistening dew you see in rom-coms—we're talking full-on slip-and-slide disaster mode.

"You nervous about the padel tournament?" Maya asked, bumping her shoulder against mine.

"Nervous? Me?" I fake-laughed. "I was literally born ready."

Lie. Total lie. I'd never played padel in my life. But when Zack—the Zack with the jawline and the vintage sneakers—invited me to his pool party's padel championship, suddenly my weekend plans went from "rebinging Gilmore Girls" to "pretending to be athletic."

The party was already in full swing. Kids everywhere, music bumping, and there—by the palm tree—was Zack, looking like an advertisement for teenagehood. I started toward him, executing my cool walk (read: wobbling like a baby deer), when *BAM.*

A golden blur shot past me.

"BARNEY!" Some girl screamed.

Her dog, a chaos-fueled retriever with zero regard for social norms, had spotted a floatie in the pool. Before anyone could react, Barney launched himself into the water, paws first, sending a literal wave of chlorined fury directly at Zack.

He was soaked. Hair ruined. Vintage sneakers destroyed.

The pool went silent. I mean, *silent.* The kind of quiet where you can hear your own heartbeat doing jumping jacks.

Then Zack started laughing. Like, actually laughing.

"Barney," the girl groaned, rushing to grab her dog. "I am SO sorry."

"Dude," Zack said, wringing out his shirt. "That was legendary."

That's when it clicked. The perfect outfits, the curated playlists, the trying so hard to look effortless—it was all just swimming upstream against reality. This messy, chaotic, dog-ruined moment? This was real.

"I'm Chloe," I told the girl, grinning. "And I think we're going to be friends."

Maya appeared beside me, eyeing the padel court. "So... are we still pretending to know how to play, or are we admitting we're just here for the snacks?"

"Snacks," I said. "Definitely snacks."

Sometimes the best moments aren't the ones you plan. They're the ones where a dog jumps in a pool and suddenly you're not pretending anymore. You're just you. Sweaty palms and all.
