Summer of Sink or Swim

The papaya sat on the kitchen counter like some alien artifact my mom brought home from the international market, its yellow-orange skin mocking my very existence.

"Try something new, Maya," she'd said, oblivious that my entire life was already one giant experiment in social survival.

I was supposed to be at Jess's pool party right now. Instead, I was trapped at home because our internet decided to ghost us—something about a cut **cable** line down the street, and the repair guy wouldn't show until Monday.

No wifi meant I couldn't even doom-scroll through everyone's Stories. My **iPhone** lay lifeless on my bed, a digital brick without connection, while somewhere across town, all my friends were probably having the time of their lives.

The real reason I wasn't going though? The **hair** situation.

Yesterday, in a moment of panic-induced clarity, I'd decided to dye my own hair purple. Because what could go wrong, right? Everything. My hair turned out less "vibrant purple" and more "accident in a nuclear reactor." I'd spent all morning wearing a beanie in July.

The irony? Jess's party was a **swimming** party. Like, actual pool swimming. Which meant the beater t-shirt I'd planned to wear all day wasn't exactly beach-appropriate.

I stared at my reflection. Okay, fine. My hair looked ... kind of amazing? In a chaotic, punk-rock, I-don't-care-what-anyone-thinks way.

My phone buzzed—low signal, but enough. A text from Jess: "where r u??? pool is lame without u"

I grabbed my phone, stuffed my purple hair under a trucker hat, and grabbed the papaya from the counter.

"We're going on an adventure," I told it.

Sometimes you have to dive into the deep end, radioactive hair and weird fruit and all.
