Summer of Secrets

Maya's summer camp experience was supposed to be Instagram-worthy, but instead she was stuck with bunkmates who treated her like she was invisible. The only thing worse? The California heat was absolutely brutal.

She leaned against the palm tree outside the mess hall, scrolling through TikTok while everyone else sat together at the popular table. Typical.

That's when she noticed it — Jordan, the girl from the bunk next door, slipping away into the woods AGAIN. This was the third night in a row.

Maya's curiosity was officially piqued. She wasn't proud of it, but she was basically spy-ing on her own bunkmate now. Call it desperate, but at least it was more interesting than watching yet another viral dance tutorial she'd never pull off.

Following Jordan through the darkness, Maya tripped over roots and silently cursed her decision to wear flip-flops. But then she heard it — a rustling, then a low grunt.

Jordan was kneeling in a clearing, and holy crap, there was a freaking bear cub not ten feet away. Her heart practically stopped. But Jordan wasn't scared. She was setting out granola bars she'd swiped from breakfast.

"It's okay," Jordan whispered, spotting Maya. "His mom got hit by a car last month. He's scared and hungry."

Maya stood there, mouth open, realizing she'd completely misjudged Jordan. The girl everyone called "weird" was secretly the bravest person she'd ever met.

"I won't tell," Maya said, sitting beside her in the dirt.

That night marked the start of their secret friendship. They'd both felt like outsiders, but now they had something real — something that wasn't performative for likes or approval. And somehow, helping this scared little bear felt like the most authentic thing Maya had done in years.

By summer's end, they'd contacted wildlife rescue together. But more importantly, they'd found each other. Sometimes the best connections aren't the ones you post about — they're the ones that find you when you're not looking for approval from anyone but yourself.
