Summer of Second Chances

padelpoolfriendcat

The padel court sizzled under the July sun, the glass walls magnifying the heat until the air itself felt thick enough to chew. Maya adjusted her grip on the racquet, her palms sweating through her tennis shoes' worth of anxiety.

"You got this, Maya!" Lily called from across the court, flipping her perfectly messy beach waves like she was in a deodorant commercial. Lily, who'd somehow become Maya's friend after approximately three conversation starters and one shared dislike of Mr. Henderson's chem class.

Maya wasn't sure she did got this. Her new friend squad had adopted her like a stray they'd found behind the 7-Eleven – welcoming, sure, but also vaguely like they were waiting for her to reveal she could speak fluent French or do a backflip. Something *interesting*.

Instead, she was about to serve a padel ball directly into the net for the fifth time that afternoon.

The ball hit the mesh with a sad fwump.

"Whatever, let's just hit the pool," Lily said, already peeling off her rash guard like she'd been waiting for an excuse. "The boys said they'd meet us there."

*The boys.* Meaning Tyler, who'd somehow gotten even more ripped since freshman year, and his crew. Maya felt a flutter in her stomach that she refused to analyze.

They were walking to the community pool when it happened – a flash of ginger fur, a yowl like something straight from a horror movie, and suddenly something launched itself from the bushes and latched itself onto Maya's leg like a fuzzy burr of pure chaos.

"WHAT THE-" Maya scrambled backward, her friend dissolving into screams that were definitely not helpful.

"It's a CAT!" someone shrieked, like they'd just encountered a wild tiger instead of what appeared to be a very angry, very orange tabby.

The cat – who was wearing a tiny collar with a bell that jingled aggressively – had decided Maya's denim shorts were its new forever home. It refused to let go, digging in with surprising commitment while Maya performed an awkward one-legged hop of shame down the sidewalk.

"Oh my GOD, it's stuck!" Lily was laughing so hard she'd collapsed onto someone's lawn. "You're being attacked by a cat!"

Maya finally managed to gently detach the cat, which immediately sat down and began cleaning itself with offended dignity. The collar read: "PRINCE. IF FOUND, PLEASE RETURN TO THE JOHNSONS. HE'S JUST MISUNDERSTOOD."

"Prince," Maya repeated, breathless from her one-legged ordeal. "Prince is misunderstood."

The boys – including Tyler – turned the corner just in time to witness Maya, disheveled and sweaty, holding a judgmental orange cat while Lily practically convulsed with laughter on the grass.

"Did you just get fought by a cat?" Tyler asked, grinning.

"We fought," Maya corrected. "And I think we both lost."

That's when she knew she was going to be okay. Because anyone who could survive a padel defeat AND a cat attack in the same afternoon and still get Tyler to laugh? That person wasn't just the new girl anymore.

She was someone who might actually belong.
