Summer of Second Chances

The sun beat down on my sweating palm as I clutched the padel racket, my knuckles white. This was it — my one shot to prove I wasn't the same awkward kid from middle school who couldn't even serve properly.

"You got this, Maya!" Liam called from the other side of the court. My sort-of friend, maybe more, definitely complicated. The padel club was packed with summer people, their designer swimsuits and expensive gear making me hyper-aware of my Target shorts and hand-me-down racket.

The game was tied. Match point. I'd spent all summer practicing after falling hard for the sport during that mix-gender tournament at the community center. Now here I was, about to serve against Jenna — queen bee of our sophomore class, whose perfectly styled ponytail didn't move an inch even during intense rallies.

"Don't choke,," someone whispered from the pool area, where a bunch of kids were hanging out, watching through the fence.

I bounced the ball. Once. Twice. Thought about how my cable bill had been ridiculous this month because I'd been watching so many padel tutorials on YouTube at 2 AM, trying to perfect my serve.

"Maya!" Liam's voice cut through my spiral.

The ball hit my strings. Perfect contact. It sailed over the net, landing right in the corner, just past Jenna's outstretched racket.

The silence lasted maybe half a second before the pool area erupted in cheers. I'd actually done it.

Jenna walked over, extending her hand. "Not bad, new girl. Want to join our league?"

I looked at Liam, who was grinning like crazy. Something shifted in my chest — that old weight of always being the backup friend, the benchwarmer, the one who never quite fit in.

"Yeah," I said, gripping her palm firmly. "I'd love that."

Maybe this summer wouldn't just be about surviving. Maybe it'd finally be about living.
