Summer of Reinvention

Alex stood in front of the mirror, adjusting the snapback backward because that's what the cool kids did. Or at least, that's what TikTok said. Summer had been supposed to be the glow-up era—working out, taking those nasty vitamin D gummies because an article promised they'd fix everything (spoiler: they didn't), and emerging in September as a whole new person.

Milo, the family's ancient golden retriever, flopped onto the floor with a dramatic sigh, sensing the vibe.

"I know, buddy," Alex muttered. "This hat makes me look like I'm trying too hard, doesn't it?"

Milo's response was a gentle head-butt to the shin.

The first day of sophomore year arrived like a stress dream. In homeroom, Alex spotted Jordan across the room—Jordan, who'd been the go-to friend since elementary school, who'd somehow spent the summer leveling up while Alex was busy failing at reinvention.

Jordan waved Alex over, already surrounded by new people. "Alex! You came!"

"Yeah, hey," Alex managed, suddenly hyper-aware of the stupid hat.

"Love the hat," someone said, and they sounded like they meant it.

"Thanks," Alex said, and something shifted. Jordan grinned, like see? You belong here.

The hat stayed on. The vitamins got chucked. And somewhere between lunch and third period, Alex realized the whole reinvention thing had been backwards all along. The glow-up wasn't about becoming someone else. It was about finally figuring out how to be yourself—awkward parts and all.

"You good?" Jordan asked later.

"Yeah," Alex said, and for the first time, it wasn't a lie. "Actually, yeah."

Sometimes the best version of yourself was just... yourself. Who knew?
