Summer of Digital Espionage

Maya's summer started with a snapchat screenshot that changed everything. Her best friend Lena had sent her a blurry image of Tyler (aka 'Fox' – don't ask, the soccer team gave him stupid nicknames) at the beach party last Friday. The caption read: "Who's this mystery girl he's with all night?"

"Um, that's literally Sarah from English," Maya typed back, thumbs flying. "You know, the one who sits behind you and draws cats in her notebook every single day?"

"Wait, THE Sarah?" Lena replied with three skull emojis. "Tyler Fox has been secretly hanging out with Notebook Cat Girl and nobody knew? This is conspiracy level stuff."

Maya became their group's unofficial social media spy that summer. She created a finsta account just to track Tyler and Sarah's public interactions – a beach day here, a movie night there, always with "just friends" captions that fooled absolutely nobody. The digital evidence was overwhelming: Tyler's posts became increasingly frequent whenever Sarah was mentioned, and Sarah's typically aesthetic feed started including candid shots with Tyler in the background.

"Okay, detective work complete," Maya announced at their July 4th hangout. "They're absolutely low-key dating. Tyler's been liking literally every post Sarah makes since June, and Sarah's been at his house three times this week according to her insta story. The math isn't mathing unless they're together."

"Bro, you're literally a spy at this point," Lena laughed while attempting (and failing) to do a TikTok dance. "This is some FBI-level stalking. I respect it."

By the bonfire that weekend, nobody was even pretending anymore. Tyler and Sarah showed up together, hands accidentally brushing, matching playlists accidentally synchronized. Maya watched from her spot near the drinks, feeling weirdly proud of her investigative work while also third-wheeling harder than she'd ever third-wheeled in her life.

"Operation Fox and Cat is fully operational," she texted Lena, sitting alone with her s'mores. "I have successfully identified them as the cute couple nobody asked for but everybody secretly loves. Also, I'm literally alone at this bonfire. Send help."

Lena replied: "LMAO you did this to yourself Sherlock Holmes gtg" and left Maya on read.

Whatever. Being a social spy was exhausting anyway. She headed home, deleting her finsta and deciding to let people figure out their own drama from now on. Well, until Sarah's best friend started DMing her the next day asking for help investigating someone new. Because apparently, Maya was now the go-to expert in teenage relationship espionage.

Some cats just couldn't resist being curious, even when they knew better.
