Summer Lightning

Maya's curly hair had a mind of its own, and today it was practically screaming for attention. She'd spent twenty minutes with the straightener, but the humidity at the community center was already winning.

"You good?" Liam asked, bouncing a padel ball off his racket like it was nothing.

"Yeah, just... my hair's being betraying me all day," Maya admitted, smoothing down another frizzy section.

"Looks fine to me," he said, then immediately looked away, studying the court like it held the secrets of the universe. Maya's stomach did that thing—half butterflies, half dread.

They were the last two left after their friend group's padel tournament had dissolved into chaos. Someone had suggested swimming to cool off, which meant the pool. Which meant swimsuits. Which meant maximum exposure.

"So, you gonna swim?" Liam asked, way too casually.

"Maybe?"

"Cool. Cool."

The lightning started then—just flashes behind the clouds, summer storms always building slowly. Maya's phone buzzed. Group chat blowing up: everyone at the pool, where were they?

"We should go," she said, heart pounding. "Before..."

"Before the storm?" Liam finished. "Yeah."

But neither moved. The air between them felt charged, like the moment before lightning strikes, when everything's holding its breath.

"My hair's gonna look ridiculous when it gets wet," Maya said quietly.

Liam actually laughed. "Dude, who cares? It's just—"

"It's not just hair," she cut in, then immediately regretted it. Too intense. Way too intense.

But then he looked at her, really looked at her, and said, "No, I know. But nobody's gonna be looking at your hair, Maya."

Her stomach did the thing again.

Lightning cracked across the sky—close this time, that immediate boom following.

"We should probably go inside," he said.

"Yeah."

They didn't make it to the pool. Instead, they ended up on the covered porch, watching the storm, knees accidentally touching, talking about everything and nothing until the rain poured down around them. Maya's hair frizzed completely, but somehow, she didn't even mind.
