Summer Jobs and Second Chances

My first week at the Geek Squad counter, and I'd already managed to tangle myself in every single HDMI cable behind the display wall.

"You good, Maya?" Jason asked, trying not to laugh as I fought against the electronic snake pit. Jason was junior year captain of the debate team and somehow made even the blue polo shirt look good.

"Totally good," I lied, palms sweating so hard I was surprised I wasn't electrocuting myself.

That's when the golden retriever bounded in. No leash, no owner, just pure chaotic energy. Before anyone could react, the dog somehow grabbed a loose display unit and took off running.

"Oh my god, Maya, go!" Jason shouted, and suddenly we were both sprinting after the dog through the mall, leaving my coworker Chad to actually watch the store.

We caught up to the dog near the food court, where it was sitting happily next to a guy wearing a shirt that said "BEAR WITH ME" in all caps. The guy was laughing, petting the dog like this was completely normal.

"That's Buster," the guy said. "Escaped again. Third time this week."

Jason and I stood there, chests heaving, probably looking insane to everyone around. But in that moment, something shifted. Jason wasn't the untouchable debate captain anymore. He was just a guy who'd chased a dog through a mall with me.

"Well," Jason said, finally catching his breath, "that's definitely going on my summer highlight reel."

"Low bar," I shot back.

He laughed—a real laugh, not the polite ones I'd heard at school. "Yeah, but you know what? This was actually kind of legendary."

We walked back to the store with Buster's owner, who turned out to be the mall security guard. Later, as Jason helped me untangle the cable mess I'd created, our knees brushed, and I caught him looking at me like maybe—just maybe—he was glad we'd both been working that shift.

Sometimes the most embarrassing moments are just plot twists in disguise. And sometimes, you don't realize you're having your first real conversation with someone until you're already three sentences in.
