Maya's golden retriever, Buster, was the only one who didn't care that she was a total fraud. The popular crowd at Oak Creek High had accepted her into their padel circle, which was honestly baffling considering she'd barely touched a racquet before summer began.

"Your backhand's getting better, Maya," Jake said after practice, flashing that smile that made half the school melt. "You joining us at the court this weekend?"

"Totally," she said, heart pounding. What they didn't know was that every night, she was streaming padel tutorials through the sketchy coaxial cable her dad had rigged up when they couldn't afford real internet. Three in the morning, practicing serves in her pajamas while Buster watched with head tilted, like she'd lost her mind.

The thing was, she actually kind of loved it now. The way the ball popped off the wall, the satisfying thwack of the racquet, the rare moments when everything clicked and she felt like she belonged.

Then came the day Jake's phone blew up during practice. Someone had leaked a video—security camera footage from the community center. Maya, at 2 AM, in her Hello Kitty pajamas, failing epically at serves and talking to herself.

"Maya's been a padel spy this whole time," someone whispered. "She's literally a beginner."

Her face burned. She grabbed her stuff and bolted, tears stinging, Buster waiting faithfully by the fence where he always watched.

"Hey," Jake called, running after her. "That was actually... kind of awesome?"

She sniffled. "What?"

"You've been practicing secretly at 2 AM?" He grinned. "That's dedication, Maya. Most people just pretend to know what they're doing. You actually put in the work."

Buster nudged her hand, and she laughed through the tears. Maybe the internet cable and her midnight fraudulence weren't secrets to hide. Maybe they were just proof that sometimes, the fake-it-till-you-make-it crowd was actually the try-till-you-make-it crowd.

And maybe that was way cooler anyway.
