Elena adjusted her fedora, a vintage piece she'd bought in Barcelona, before stepping onto the padel court. The club was empty at this hour—just how she preferred it. Her running shoes squeaked against the artificial grass as she practiced her serve, each stroke a temporary reprieve from the weight in her chest.
She'd been working as a corporate spy for three years, infiltrating tech startups and feeding intellectual property to competitors. Her current target: Marco's robotics company. She'd met him at this very club two months ago, pretending to be a venture capitalist interested in ethical AI. They'd played padel every Tuesday since, his laugh genuine, his ambitions uncorrupted by the industry's cynicism.
"You're getting better," Marco called from the sidelines, appearing exactly when she'd hoped he wouldn't. He held two protein shakes. "But you're still running yourself too hard."
She accepted the drink, fingers brushing his. "Occupational hazard."
"The corporate world will eat you alive if you let it." Marco's expression softened. "My last boss called himself 'the bull'—charged through problems without considering collateral damage. I swore I'd never become that."
Elena's phone buzzed in her bag. The bull—her actual handler, demanding the encryption keys she'd promised to deliver by Friday. Three days away.
"Everything okay?" Marco asked.
She hesitated, then: "I have to tell you something."
The confession spilled out—everything. The surveillance, the fake identity, the way she'd been paid to dismantle everything he'd built. She waited for anger, for him to call security, for the look of betrayal she'd seen twice before.
Instead, Marco set down his drink and picked up a racquet.
"I know," he said quietly. "My co-founder warned me about you three weeks ago. We ran background checks the day after our third match."
Elena's hat slipped from her head. "You knew?"
"I wanted to see if you'd choose differently." He bounced a ball on his racquet face. "The encryption keys you were supposed to steal? They're fake. The real prototype's been in a secure facility since before we met."
"Why didn't you—"
"Because everyone deserves a chance to change their story." He gestured to the court. "Play again? No secrets this time."
