Strikeout at Papaya Stand

Marcus had been in Florida for exactly three hours when his cousin dragged him to help at the family's fruit stand. "It's character building," Tía Rosa promised, but Marcus suspected it was just free labor.

The papaya display looked harmless enough — a pyramid of orange-green fruit that Marcus had somehow never actually tried. Being the city kid from Chicago, he felt out of place among the palm trees swaying like they were mocking his very existence.

"You're up," his cousin said, abandoning him to help a customer who'd appeared out of nowhere.

Great. Now he was alone with the fruit pyramid that seemed dangerously unstable.

Then came the baseball team. Like, the actual high school varsity team, fresh from practice, all tall and athletic and unfairly attractive. The kind of guys who'd never given Marcus a second look back home. But here? Here he was just the weird fruit stand guy in his cousin's oversized apron.

"What's good?" asked the catcher — yes, Marcus recognized the gear, he wasn't totally hopeless — a guy with the kind of jawline that belonged in a toothpaste commercial.

"Uh, everything?" Brilliant, Marcus. Truly inspiring.

The guy laughed, and Marcus felt his face heating up like he'd spent too long in the Florida sun. "Never had papaya before. My mom keeps trying to get me to eat healthy."

Before Marcus could respond with something that didn't make him sound like an absolute dork, a sound erupted from behind the stand. A low, rumbling sound that vibrated through the wooden boards beneath his feet.

A bull. An actual bull had wandered out from somewhere and was now staring at the papaya display like it was the most interesting thing it had ever seen.

The baseball team scattered. The cute catcher bolted. Marcus, however, was trapped behind the fruit pyramid with nowhere to go.

The bull stepped forward, sniffing a papaya with what looked suspiciously like judgment. Then it just... opened its mouth and ate the whole thing. One gulp, gone.

"No way," Marcus whispered.

The bull's eyes met his. There was a moment of absolute understanding between them. Then the bull turned and walked away, like it had just completed its morning errands.

The baseball team inched back, faces pale.

"Dude," said the catcher, staring at Marcus with newfound respect. "That was... actually kind of epic."

And just like that, Marcus went from "random fruit stand guy" to "the guy who stood down a bull over papaya." Not exactly how he'd planned to make friends, but hey — character building, right?

That night, Tía Rosa made him try papaya for the first time.

"Not bad," Marcus admitted, watching another sunset over the palm trees.

"I knew you'd come around," she said, winking. "You're tougher than you think."

Maybe Florida wasn't so bad after all. Even if he did now have a reputation as the guy who stared down bulls for fruit.
