Stream Dreams
Maya's hands shook as she fumbled with the HDMI cable, her heart doing that nervous flutter thing it always did when she was about to do something terrifying. Like streaming for the first time. Or talking to Corey. But today, it was both.
"You got this, Maya," whispered Zara, her best friend since seventh grade, who was currently balancing a literal pyramid of energy drinks on Maya's desk. "Six cans high. That's gotta be some kind of world record."
"More like a pyramid of regrets," Maya muttered, finally jamming the cable into place. Her setup looked ridiculous—old monitor, duct-taped webcam, and that ancient sphinx poster she'd thrifted because it looked "mysteriously aesthetic." Now its stone eyes just seemed to judge her.
The stream started. Zero viewers. Good.
Then: one viewer. Two. Corey's username popped up. MAYA'S HEART:
"Hey everyone, welcome to..." she froze. What was she even doing? Gaming speedruns? Art tutorials? She'd planned something, something cool, but now her mind was blank.
Zara mouthed: SAY SOMETHING.
"Welcome to my stream where I... speedrun anxiety?" Maya cracked. Chat blew up. Lols. Relatable.
Corey typed: "ur setup's lowkey fire tho"
Maya actually laughed. For real. And suddenly she was running—not away, but forward. Telling stories about how she'd found this sphinx poster behind a dumpster, how the cable kept threatening to disconnect, how Zara had once built a seven-can pyramid and it had ended in disaster.
By midnight, she had 147 followers. Corey had DM'd her. And the sphinx poster had officially become her mascot.
"We're doing this again next week," Zara said, already planning another pyramid.
Maya grinned, finally catching her reflection in the dark monitor—someone who'd stopped running from everything scary.
"Yeah. We definitely are."
