Storm Watchers
Maya walked Max—the family's ancient golden retriever—through the park, phone in her back pocket like it was burning a hole through her denim shorts. She'd been cyber-stalking Jordan's Instagram for three hours straight. Jordan, who sat behind her in AP Bio, whose hair defied gravity and basic physics.
"You're being a total creep," her best friend Kia had texted earlier. "You're not a spy, Maya. You're just... thorough."
Lightning cracked across the sky—a jagged scar of electric violet that made the hairs on her arms stand up. Max flinched, pressing his warm side against her leg. Thunder rolled three seconds later. Close.
Her phone buzzed. Jordan had posted a story: a mirror selfie with the caption "vitamin D check ☀️" looking glowy and effortless while Maya felt like a greaseball of anxious energy.
Why was she obsessed? Jordan seemed perfect—popular, smart, effortlessly cool. Meanwhile Maya was still figuring out who she even was, let alone who she wanted to be. She took these weird gummy vitamins her mom swore would fix everything—focus, skin, mood—like maybe there was a supplement for becoming a person.
Another lightning flash, closer this time. The air smelled like ozone and impending rain. Max tugged toward home, his tail between his legs.
Then she saw it: Jordan walking toward her, hood up, ducking under the same sudden downpour. No filter, no perfect lighting, just another person caught in the chaos, carrying a battered umbrella that was obviously not gonna cut it.
Their eyes met. Jordan laughed—a genuine, awkward sound, not the curated caption-voice from Instagram.
"Hey," Jordan said. "Is Max allowed in the shelter? My dog's terrified of storms."
"Yeah," Maya managed. "You have a dog?"
"Rescue. Scared of everything. Including me, most days."
They ran for the covered pavilion together, soaked and laughing. And in that lightning-lit moment, spying from a distance felt pointless. This—the real, awkward, uncurated version—was way better. No vitamins required. Just the storm, and the choice to stand in it together.
