Storm Over the Padel Court

Maya stood frozen at the edge of the court, clutching her paddle like it might suddenly develop magical powers that would make her not suck at sports. Which, obviously, it wouldn't.

"You got this!" Chloe yelled from the sidelines, frantically typing on her phone while somehow still managing to be the most supportive friend ever. "Just remember: breathe, don't overthink it, and absolutely do NOT trip over your own feet again!"

Maya's mom had spent the entire morning stuffing her purse with emergency vitamin gummies because apparently the solution to social anxiety was citrus-flavored supplements. "For your immune system, mi amor," she'd said, pressing them into Maya's palm like they were ancient wisdom rather than things shaped like bears.

Now, Maya could feel them burning a hole in her pocket, mocking her with their cheerful promise of wellness while she spiraled into full-blown panic.

The sky overhead darkened. The first rumble of thunder vibrated through the soles of her neon court shoes.

"Game point!" someone shouted, and suddenly the ball was rocketing toward her.

Her body moved before her brain could finish processing that this was definitely, absolutely not her moment. She was running – actually, properly running – legs pumping, heart hammering, everything narrowed down to the bright yellow sphere slicing through the suddenly electric air.

Then it happened: a flash of lightning cracked across the sky, brilliant and impossible, like someone had taken a photo of the exact moment she decided to stop being scared.

Her paddle connected. Not perfectly. Not gracefully. But the ball sailed over the net, landing exactly where it needed to.

"YESSS!" Maya screamed, arms raised, hair frizzy from the static electricity suddenly filling the air, feeling entirely, completely alive.

The referee blew the whistle. "Match suspended! Everyone inside, now!"

But as the team sprinted toward the covered area, laughing and shoving each other out of the way, Maya grabbed a vitamin gummy from her pocket and chewed it thoughtfully.

Maybe her mom was right about some things. Or maybe it was just the lightning talking. Either way, she'd definitely be coming back tomorrow.
