Storm Over Shallow End

Marcus stood at the edge of the pool, chlorine stinging his nose, holding a crumpled five-dollar bill like it was radioactive. It was Friday—payday at his dad's landscaping business—but standing in front of Jessica and her squad felt harder than any summer of mowing lawns in the Georgia heat.

"Diving for dollar?" Jessica asked, flipping her hair. "Again?"

The pool at the rec center was basically neutral territory during summer. Baseball players from the travel team hung out on one side, theater kids on the other, and everyone gravitated toward whoever was winning the unspoken popularity contest that week. Marcus usually floated somewhere in the middle—acceptable enough to exist, invisible enough to avoid trouble.

He threw the dollar. Water splashed everywhere. "Whatever."

Jessica's friend Maya sighed dramatically. "You're literally trying too hard."

Then Lightning—his cat, not the weather pattern—streaked past the chain-link fence, chasing a moth. Everyone cracked up. Because of course his cat would escape during the most awk moment of his life.

"Your cat is literally chaos energy," Jessica said, but she was smiling.

Marcus scrambled toward the gate when the sky opened up. Actual lightning this time, flashing purple across clouds like the world's biggest photobomb. Rain poured down, sending everyone sprinting toward the covered picnic area.

But his cable—phone charger, actually—was still plugged into the outlet by the pool. His lifeline to his mom, to emergency calls, to literally everything.

"Wait!" He dashed back, snatching the charging cable as thunder shook the ground.

Jessica stood under the shelter, watching him. "You could've gotten struck, you know."

"It's just a cable," he said, dripping wet, heart hammering. But she stepped closer, and suddenly the chaos of Lightning (the cat), the storm, the dollar in the pool, none of it mattered. Because Jessica was looking at him like she actually saw him.

"You know," she said, "that was kind of... badass?"

Marcus smiled. The baseball players were whooping about something, the dollar was sinking to the bottom of the pool, his cat was probably terrorizing the neighborhood, and his phone was at 4%.

But standing there with rain plastering his hair to his forehead and Jessica smiling at him like he was worth noticing?

Yeah. Sometimes chaos was exactly what you needed.
