Storm Over Center Field
Maya stood at home plate, cleats digging into the dirt, as Coach barked signals from the dugout. The baseball field felt like her second home—or it used to, before everything got complicated this semester.
"You coming to Jamie's party Friday?" Chloe leaned against the backstop, phone in hand like always. "Everyone's going."
"Can't. Sectionals." Maya adjusted her batting gloves, trying to ignore the twist in her stomach. Baseball wasn't exactly cool anymore, especially when half the school had discovered padel at that new fancy club downtown. Even Chloe, who'd never picked up a racket in her life, was posting padel selfies with the popular crowd.
"God, Maya, you're so obsessed with that ancient sport." Chloe rolled her eyes, but not unkindly. "Live a little."
The first crack of thunder made them both jump.
"Practice is canceled!" Coach yelled. "Everyone inside, NOW!"
As the team scattered toward the locker room, the sky opened up. Sheets of rain blurred the world into gray and silver. Maya sprinted for the equipment shed, but stopped when she saw someone standing near the parking lot—Sam, the new transfer student who'd been watching her practice all week.
"Forgot my phone," Sam said sheepishly, gesturing toward the bench where his device sat precariously close to a puddle.
A flash of lightning split the sky, illuminating his concerned expression. Maya's heart did something genuinely annoying and teenager-like.
"I'll get it." She bolted across the wet grass, snatched the phone, and ducked under the shed's overhang beside him. Rain pounded the metal roof like applause.
"Thanks. You're really fast." Sam smiled, and okay, maybe the cliché was worth it.
"Baseball conditioning." Maya wiped rain from her face, suddenly hyperaware of her messy hair and drenched uniform. "So, uh, you play?"
"Padel, mostly. But I've been wanting to try baseball." He shrugged. "Looks intense."
Another lightning strike, closer this time. The air smelled like ozone and possibility.
"It is." Maya found herself grinning. "I could teach you. If you want."
"I'd like that."
The storm raged on outside, but Maya didn't mind. Some things were worth getting soaked for.
