Storm Chasers

Maya's phone buzzed with the group chat notification—*Party at Jay's, 9 PM. Everyone's going.* She stared at the screen, fingers hovering over the keyboard. Her sophomore year had been a series of awkward almosts—almost kissed, almost cool, almost brave enough to show up to things like this.

Outside her window, storm clouds gathered like bruises against the sky. Perfect weather for staying home and overthinking.

Then her dog, Buster, started his neurotic pacing—back and forth across her room like he was on a mission. The old golden retriever had been her constant through everything: the divorce, the move, the nightmare of freshman year where she'd eaten lunch alone for weeks.

"You're right," she told him, grabbing her jacket. "We should go for a walk."

They ended up at the old park behind school, deserted except for the distant flash of party lights at Jay's house. That's when she saw the fox—a sleek, red shape darting between the swings, bold as anything. It paused, watching her with golden eyes that seemed to say, *What are you afraid of?*

Then lightning split the sky—a sudden, violent crack that turned everything white. In that flash, she saw the fox transform, just for a second, into something wilder, something that belonged to no one.

Her phone buzzed again. *U coming?*

Maya typed back, *Yeah. On my way.*

She didn't know if she was ready for parties or boys or whatever came next. But walking home with the storm breaking overhead and Buster trotting faithfully beside her, she felt something like courage. Maybe sophomore year wouldn't be another series of almosts. Maybe she'd actually show up.
