Storm Chasers

Maya stared at her phone screen, the message from Jordan still glowing: 'we need to talk.' Her heart did that stupid flutter thing it always did when his name popped up, even though she knew this wasn't going to be good. They'd been best friends since seventh grade, but lately everything felt different. Charged. Like the atmosphere before a storm.

She grabbed her jacket and headed out, her old dog Buster trailing behind her. The golden retriever sensed her mood, pressing against her leg as they walked toward the creek behind her house. The water was higher than usual, murky and fast-moving from the rains earlier that week.

'Stay, Buster,' she commanded, but the dog ignored her completely, splashing into the shallows. Typical.

'You're literally the worst,' she muttered, but she was smiling now.

That's when she saw it—Buster had cornered something against the rocks. A cat. A tiny, drenched kitten that looked like it had seen better days. Like, way better days. The cat hissed, all claws and attitude despite being the size of a mango.

Buster just wagged his tail, confused why his new friend wasn't reciprocating the energy.

'Oh my god, you drama queen,' Maya said, wading into the water to scoop up the kitten. It immediately started purring, because obviously.

The first flash of lightning split the sky, followed instantly by thunder that shook her chest. Great. Now she was soaking wet, holding a random cat, with her dumb dog doing zoomies in the background.

'Maya!'

She turned to see Jordan running toward her, holding an umbrella and looking stressed. 'I've been trying to call you! The weather app said—'

He stopped when he saw her: wet hair, muddy shoes, cat in one hand, dog losing its mind. Then he started laughing. Not mean laughing, but the real kind.

'What?' she demanded.

'Nothing, it's just...' He gestured at the whole situation. 'Only you would rescue a cat during a thunderstorm while your dog tries to drown itself.'

'Buster's fine,' she said, but she was smiling now. 'And what did you want to talk about?'

Jordan looked at the storm clouds gathering overhead, then back at her. 'This can wait. Let's get your circus inside first.'

As they walked back, Maya realized something. Sometimes friendship isn't about big declarations or perfect moments. Sometimes it's about someone showing up with an umbrella when you're being ridiculous, and staying anyway.

The cat purred in her arms. Buster shook water all over both of them. And Jordan? He just kept walking beside her, like this was exactly where he was supposed to be.
