Storm at the Sphinx's Party

Maya pulled her beanie **hat** lower, practically swallowing her forehead. First house party. Worst idea ever. The backyard of some junior's house was packed, bodies shimmering in the heat, playlist bumping something low and raspy. She'd only come because Chloe swore it would be 'lowkey' — definitely not lowkey.

The pool glowed in the twilight, people already **swimming** in their clothes. Maya spotted him across the yard: Leo, the enigmatic transfer student who sat in the back of AP English, always reading something thick and battered. Girls called him 'the **sphinx**' because he never spoke unless called on, and even then, his answers were cryptic one-liners that made the whole class go quiet.

He wasn't in the pool. He was leaning against a **palm** tree, scrolling through his phone like he'd rather be literally anywhere else.

Lightning cracked the sky — real **lightning**, vivid purple veins stitching the darkness. Someone screamed. Then laughter, because teenagers treat natural disasters like ambiance. The first fat drops hit the concrete as the party fractured, people scattering toward the patio cover.

Maya froze. Social anxiety had her glued to the spot.

Then Leo appeared beside her, water dripping from his hair. He'd jumped in the pool. 'You coming?'

'To where?'

'Inside. Unless you wanna stay here and get absolutely schooled by this storm.'

They ran together, dodging puddles, and somewhere between the **palm** tree and the back door, Maya didn't feel like hiding anymore. Her **hat** came off. She was soaked and shivering and laughing, and for the first time all night, she wasn't thinking about who was watching or whether she was doing it right.

She was just running through rain with a boy who might not actually be a sphinx after all.

Sometimes that's enough. Sometimes that's everything.
