Martha stood in her kitchen, the smell of fresh spinach wilting in the pan filling the small space. At eighty-two, she'd made this recipe thousands of times, yet today felt different. Her granddaughter Sophie watched with wide eyes, missing nothing. At twelve, with hair the color Martha's had been sixty years ago, Sophie was beginning to ask the questions that mattered. 'Nana,' Sophie said, 'were you really a spy?' Martha laughed, the sound warm and familiar. 'Oh darling, everyone thinks their grandmother led a exciting life.' She turned off the stove. 'I was just a girl who learned to listen.' But the truth was more complicated. In 1944, Martha had indeed carried messages for the resistance in her small French village, tucked inside hollowed-out vitamin bottles that looked innocent in a mother's basket. She'd been young, with nothing to lose, and the codename they gave her had been Fox — because she was quick, quiet, and disappeared when she needed to. Her red hair had been her signature then, until she'd darkened it with walnut stain to avoid detection. Now, it was snow-white, thin and fragile like the rest of her. 'Why spinach?' Sophie asked, pulling a chair to the counter. Martha smiled. 'Your grandfather grew it. Every spring, he'd plant rows of it, saying, 'This will keep us strong.' During the war, when food was scarce, those spinach leaves saved us. Now it's just habit. Comfort.' Sophie nodded, taking the plate Martha offered. 'Would you do it again? Be... a Fox?' Martha looked out the window where her own garden grew, tomatoes and herbs and yes, spinach. 'I did what I was needed to do,' she said softly. 'That's what we do, isn't it? We plant seeds, we tend what matters, and we leave the harvesting to those who come after.' She touched Sophie's hair, so like her own had been. 'The real courage isn't in secrets. It's in the ordinary — in loving through hardship, in putting food on the table, in telling the truth when it matters.' Sophie took a bite, thoughtful. 'Maybe I'll be a Fox too someday.' Martha's eyes twinkled. 'You already are, my dear. You already are.'
