Stolen Bases and Second Glances
Marcus adjusted his baseball cap, trying to look casual. Which was hilarious, because casual was the opposite of how he felt when Chloe walked past the dugout. Her hair smelled like chlorine and coconut shampoo – a combination he'd somehow memorized from eighth period English when she sat behind him.
"You gonna stare all day or actually swing the bat?" Tyrell yelled from home plate. "Bro's been acting like a total spy ever since swim team practice started."
Marcus flipped him off, grinning. The whole baseball team knew about his crush. Which was humiliating. What was more humiliating? They'd voted him "Most Likely to Secretly Follow Someone Like a Creep" at the last team dinner.
Friday's pool party changed everything.
Marcus showed up ready to play it cool. Board shorts? Check. New sunscreen that definitely smelled expensive? Double check. What he hadn't prepared for was Chloe emerging from the water like some kind of mythical creature, droplets tracing down her arms, laughing at something he couldn't hear.
His brain short-circuited. His legs carried him toward the pool before his common sense could intervene.
"Nice dive, Marcus," she called out. "10 out of 10 for the gracefulness."
He'd fallen. While fully clothed. In front of everyone.
But instead of laughing and walking away, she'd extended a hand. "You coming in or what? The water's perfect."
Later, floating on his back beside her under the string lights, watching the sky purple into night, Marcus realized something profound: sometimes the best moments in life aren't the ones you plan. They're the ones where you take a swing, miss completely, and end up somewhere better anyway.
"Hey," Chloe said softly, splashing water toward him. "You know that giant bear mascot costume from the pep rally?"
"Yeah?"
"I'm the one inside it." She laughed at his expression. "What? Did you think it was some random senior?"
Marcus started laughing too. He couldn't help it. The girl he'd been secretly watching for weeks – the confident swimmer, the effortless beauty – was the person who spent halftime in a suffocating bear costume, dancing awkwardly to school spirit songs.
Somehow, that made her even more perfect.
