Still Water

The pool sat perfectly still, an artificial lagoon carved into the infinity edge of their villa in Maldives. Elena floated on her back, salt water stinging her eyes, watching the sunset bleed across the horizon. She'd been here three days and hadn't once checked her phone.

Marcus found her there. His shadow fell across her face like an approaching storm. "The auditors arrive tomorrow," he said. "They're going to tear apart everything."

She didn't move. "Let them."

"You don't understand. This isn't just money." His voice cracked. "I built this empire. I was the bull who charged through every obstacle, who refused to accept 'no' from anyone. Including you."

Elena stood, water cascading down her body like a second skin. She extended her palm, fingers slightly curled, and Marcus flinched as if she might strike him. Instead, she simply showed him her wedding ring, the diamonds catching the dying light.

"You charged, Marcus. You always charged. But you never once asked if I wanted to be trampled." She pulled the ring off and dropped it into the pool. It sank without a splash, disappearing into the artificial blue depths.

"What have you done?" He knelt at the edge, frantically searching the water.

"Finally learned to swim," she said, turning toward the villa to pack her things.
