Stealing Home, Finding Truth

Marcus stood at the plate, his hands sweating through his batting gloves. The baseball diamond stretched before him like a stage where everyone was waiting for him to fail. Again.

"You got this, bro!" yelled Ty from the dugout, his voice dripping with that fake confidence that felt like straight-up bull. Ty was his best friend, but sometimes Marcus wondered if Ty lived for moments when Marcus could prove him right—or better yet, prove the haters wrong. Either way, Ty won.

Marcus had struck out four times this week. The team's new coach, Coach Miller, called him "a liability." His dad kept dropping hints about maybe focusing on academics instead. Even his little sister asked if he'd considered quitting.

Only one person believed in him: Buster, the neighborhood stray dog who'd been showing up at Marcus's window since third grade. Buster didn't care about batting averages or varsity jackets. Buster just wanted someone to throw his tennis ball and scratch behind his ears.

The pitch came—fast, outside corner. Marcus swung anyway. Missed.

"Strike three!"

The team groaned. Ty shook his head, but Marcus caught it—the disappointment masked as encouragement. That thing they did where they acted like everything was fine when it definitely wasn't.

After the game, Marcus sat behind the backstop, throwing Buster's tennis ball. The dog chased it with pure joy, no pressure, no expectations. Just the simple pleasure of the game.

"Why can't it be like this?" Marcus asked Buster. The dog tilted his head, like he actually understood.

Marcus realized something: all the pressure, the expectations, the need to prove himself—that was the real bull. Baseball was supposed to be fun. That's why he started playing in the first place.

He called Ty later. "Hey, I'm not trying out for varsity."

"What? But—"

"I'm gonna play rec ball. With Jake and them. Just for fun."

Silence. Then Ty laughed. "You know what? That's actually legit. Maybe I'll join you."

The next day, Marcus and Ty played catch in the park, Buster chasing every ball that went astray. No pressure, no expectations. Just baseball, a best friend, and a dog who made everything better.

Sometimes the bravest thing you can do is quit trying to be someone you're not.
