Static & Storms
Maya's cat, Jinx, had zero respect for boundaries. Like right now — when Maya was supposed to be studying for finals, Jinx was batting at the loose coaxial cable behind the TV like it was a personal enemy.
"Jinx, no," Maya sighed, reaching to grab her. The cat bolted, leaping over the couch in a blur of black fur.
Then the power died.
All at once, the TV flickered off, the WiFi router's lights went dark, and Maya's room plunged into shadows. Great. Now she REALLY couldn't study.
Her phone buzzed with a text from Kai, the cute barista from the coffee shop who'd been flirting with her for weeks: *u ok? power just went out at my place too*
Maya's stomach did that stupid fluttery thing. *same. studying for AP Bio is now officially impossible*
*want company? i have snacks*
Maya stared at the message. Her pulse quickened. Kai wanted to come over. HERE. While her room was messy and she was wearing her grossest sweatpants.
But then she thought: screw it. This might be her chance.
*sure 😊*
Outside, the sky cracked open. Lightning flashed, turning her window into a strobe light. Rain pounded against the glass like it was trying to break in.
Kai arrived five minutes later, soaking wet but grinning like it was all part of the plan. They'd brought chips, two sodas, and — weirdly — a portable battery pack.
"My phone's at 3%," Kai explained, shaking rain from their hair. "Priorities."
They sat on the floor in Maya's room, illuminated by candlelight and the occasional lightning flash. Jinx, sensing new humans, emerged from hiding and immediately curled up in Kai's lap like she'd known them for years.
"Traitor," Maya muttered, but she was smiling.
"So," Kai said, their voice dropping to something softer. "You really worried about that Bio exam?"
"Terrified," Maya admitted. "My parents are already on my case about grades. If I bomb this..."
"Hey." Kai reached out, palm up. "You're gonna crush it. You're smart. Also, you have a really cute cat. That counts for something."
Maya laughed. "That's definitely on the College Board rubric."
Their fingers brushed. A jolt went through Maya that had nothing to do with static electricity or the storm outside.
"Maya?" Kai's voice dropped even lower. "Can I tell you something?"
"Yeah?"
"The power going out? Total excuse. I just really wanted to see you."
The air between them crackled like the lightning outside. Maya's heart hammered against her ribs. She'd been waiting for someone to say something like that to her for — well, forever. But now that it was happening, she felt weirdly calm.
She reached out, interlacing her fingers with Kai's. Their palm was warm against hers, solid and real.
"I'm really glad you came over," she said.
Kai's smile could've powered the whole neighborhood. "Me too."
They sat there while the storm raged outside, Jinx purring between them, the unspoken promise of something new hanging in the air like electricity. Maya hadn't studied a single page of Biology, but somehow, she didn't think she'd ever forget this night.
