Static & Sphinxes
The bass thumped through Maya's chest like a second heartbeat. House parties weren't really her vibe—too many people, too much performed energy—but Chloe had sworn this would be different. "It's just gonna be our people," she'd promised, which turned out to mean approximately three hundred of Chloe's closest friends.
Maya pressed herself against a wall in the kitchen, nursing a flat **orange** soda that had been warm for an hour. She watched Chloe across the room, holding court with the popular crowd, laugh pitched high and bright. They'd been best **friend**s since seventh grade, but lately it felt like Chloe was constantly upgrading her social OS while Maya was still running on compatibility mode.
A flash of **lightning** split the sky outside, illuminating the kitchen in stark blue-white. Someone screamed dramatically, and the power cut out, leaving the party in sudden darkness punctuated by phone flashlights and scattered giggles.
"Rad storm, right?"
Maya jumped. A guy she'd seen around school—Leo, something—had materialized beside her. He had that unaffectedly messy hair that either meant he didn't care or he cared exactly the right amount.
"Yeah," she managed. "Very atmospheric."
They stood in comfortable silence for a moment before something brushed against Maya's ankle. She looked down to find a large, dignified **dog** sitting beside her, tail thumping steadily against the cabinet.
"That's Buster," Leo said. "He's my emotional support animal. Technically." He lowered his voice. "Mostly he just really loves parties."
A sudden laugh escaped Maya's throat. The absurdity of it—this massive **dog** at a high school rager, acting like he belonged on the guest list—cracked something open in her chest.
"You're Chloe's friend, right?" Leo asked, not in the way people usually said it, like he was trying to figure out her social ranking, but genuinely curious. "I see you guys in the library sometimes. You seem like you actually get stuff done."
Before she could respond, the lights flickered back on. Across the room, Chloe caught her eye and waved, gesturing for Maya to come join her circle.
For a second, Maya considered it. This was what she'd come for, wasn't it? To finally be part of that group, to not be the quiet one on the edges anymore?
But then she looked down at Buster, who was looking up at her like she was exactly where she was supposed to be. And beside her, Leo was checking his phone with this soft, private smile, completely unbothered by the social hierarchies swirling around them.
She realized she'd been treating her life like a riddle she had to solve—a **sphinx** guarding the passage to the real version of herself. But the answer wasn't to transform into Chloe. It was to find the people who didn't need her to transform at all.
"Hey," Maya said, turning toward Leo instead. "Want to go see if the backyard is less chaotic?"
His face brightened. "Absolutely. Buster knows the way."
