Static & Sparks
Maya's hair was doing that thing again. The thing where it refused to acknowledge physics, personal space, or the $45 anti-frizz serum she'd wasted her allowance on. Spring humidity in Nashville was no joke, and neither was the Homecoming dance in exactly three hours.
"You're going to be fine," her best friend Chloe said through FaceTime, somehow managing to look flawless while Maya looked like she'd been electrocuted. "Jordan's not going to care about your hair."
"Jordan literally has perfect hair, Chloe. Like, it just does what it's told. Mine has commitment issues."
Her cat, Nacho, chose that moment to leap onto the bathroom counter and knock Maya's phone into the sink. Chaos ensued. Nacho bolted, Maya lunged, and somehow her curling iron got tangled in the shower curtain. It was a whole moment.
Then came the thunder. Like, serious bass-drop thunder that shook the windows.
"Great," Maya muttered, rescuing her phone from the sink (thankfully dry). "Now I'm going to have frizzy hair AND get struck by lightning before Jordan even picks me up."
But the storm outside wasn't just any storm. Lightning kept flashing — strobe-light bright, painting her room in weird freeze-frame moments. Nacho was now perched on her windowsill, tail twitching, eyes wide as he watched the sky light up.
And then Maya saw it. The way the lightning flashed through her window, catching Nacho's silhouette against the glass. Her crazy, chaotic hair catching the light in a way that wasn't messy — it was electric. Literally and figuratively.
She grabbed her phone and snapped a picture. Her hair everywhere, Nacho looking like a tiny storm god, lightning flashing in the background. It wasn't polished or perfect or Instagram-filtered. It was real.
She posted it with the caption: "Channeling main character energy whether the universe likes it or not."
By the time Jordan showed up (looking nervous and way more human than Maya had given them credit for), the rain had slowed to this soft drizzle that made everything smell like wet pavement and new beginnings. Her hair was still doing its own thing, but whatever.
"Your hair looks amazing," Jordan said, and for once, Maya didn't feel like they were just being nice.
Sometimes the best moments happen when you stop trying to control everything and let the chaos speak for itself. Even if the chaos involves a cat, a lightning storm, and hair that has a mind of its own.
